Build a Gaming PC

CPU

The more cores and threads the CPU has, the better performance the gaming PC has. However, not many games can use more than 8 threads (logical cores) at a time. So a high-clock-rate ten-core CPU is better for gaming than a hundred-core CPU with a low clock rate.

A gaming PC with a six to eight-core CPU is ideal for most gamers. Four core processors are highly viable for tight-budget gaming PCs. Pro gamers/streamers who are ready to pay can use  CPUs with 16 cores or even more.

Remember that with the same cores/threads at the same clock rate, the more recent generation the CPU is, the higher performance it has.

CPU cooler

Picking a cooler depends on the default TDP and the overclocking TDP of your CPU. Intel has stock coolers for 65W CPUs, AMD has stock coolers for 65W, 95W, and 140W CPUs. If you plan on using your CPU without overclocking, you can use the stock CPU cooler that comes with the CPU. Otherwise, you need a third party cooler for your system.

There are two types of CPU coolers: air cooler and liquid cooler.

An air cooler relocates the heat from the CPU into the air inside the case. The case needs good airflow to push the hot air out. On the other hand, a liquid cooler transfers the heat from the CPU straight outside of the case via the fan on the radiator. So an air cooler is good for a big case with good airflow while a liquid cooler can be used in both big and small cases.

Air coolers cost less than liquid coolers mostly. You install an air cooler and leave it there, no maintenance required. A liquid cooler needs periodical maintenance to maintain the best state, preventing it from leaking the cooling liquid.

Graphics card (Video Card - GPU)

A good graphics card for a gaming PC is a card that doesn’t cause a performance bottleneck. An overpowered graphics card pairing with a budget CPU or vice versa is not good. When you are gaming, the graphics card’s usage is at 9x% and the CPU’s is at 70% is an ideal state (1, 2, 3).

There are many specs if you want to fully understand a graphics card. But the manufacturers have already balanced all specs so you don’t have to worry so much. You only need to know about some main specs: GPU model, video card memory (VRAM).

The GPU model shows the average power of a graphics card, other specs will impact a little into its overall performance. The core clock speed of a GPU is different from various custom versions that come from different brands. The higher core clock speed a graphics card has, the better the VRM setup and cooling system it needs.

The newer graphics card’s VRAM type is, the better performance it has. The latest VRAM type is GDDR6X. It has better performance, more energy-efficient, but might not be cheap.

The current largest size VRAM of a gaming graphics card now is 24GB. Of course that 24GB VRAM graphics card can do a lot more than just gaming when you mostly need 2-4GB for 1080p gaming, 4-6GB for 2k gaming, 6-8GB for 4k gaming, and at least 8GB for 8k gaming.

Depending on your like and the compatibility of your games and apps, you can choose an AMD or an NVIDIA graphics card. Each brand’s products have their advantages and disadvantages.

Motherboard

The motherboard chipset is the main factor that determines other specifications. All the PC components connect to the motherboard: CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, and peripherals. The chipset manages the communication between those components.

Both AMD and Intel have different motherboard chipsets for different intent users. Generally, there are four types of motherboard chipsets with different Prefix letters:

  • Entry-level chipsets (Intel H chipsets, AMD A chipsets): These are usually for budget gaming pc builds. They have minimum In/Out options for basic use: few SATA ports, no high speed USB ports, 2 DIMM slots of RAM. They also feature minimal VRM setups, so that you can run mostly up to Intel Core i5, or AMD Ryzen 5 at default clock.

  • Midrange chipsets (AMD B*50 chipsets, Intel B*60 and H*70 chipsets): These motherboards are made for average users who need more ports, storage raid feature, light overclocking on AMD CPUs maybe. Their VRM builds get more reliable for higher CPUs.
Most mid-range motherboards with 2 16X PCIe slots support Crossfire mode for multi AMD GPUs in a system.

  • Premium chipsets (AMD X*70 chipsets, Intel Z chipsets): The premium X and Z chipset motherboards are the best tier for personal computers. The people that buy those motherboards know what they are doing.
These motherboards have the most PCIe lanes, the most I/O options, and are able to overclock components (CPU, RAM) to get more performance of the system. These boards are always equipped with better VRMs and support faster memory.
They also support AMD Crossfire for multi GPUs, some of them support SLI mode for multi NVIDIA GPUs.

  • Workstation/Server chipsets (Prefix X*9 chipsets on both AMD and Intel): These motherboards are used for high power workstations or servers. These chipsets support eight RAM slots for a larger RAM amount, up to 44 PCIe lanes for more GPUs or storage, and support more than one CPU on a motherboard (up to 8 CPUs).

These name prefix rules may change at any time, but the customer categories are always the same. Picking a motherboard for your gaming PC depends on your cash in hand, and how often you upgrade your components. If you own a gaming PC but don't know much about your motherboard, you can see here: How to check your motherboard specs.

RAM

DDR4 is the latest RAM standard that is used for both AMD and Intel processors.

There are 3 factors to consider when you choose RAM sticks for your gaming PC: memory capacity, memory speed and CAS latency.

Some single motherboards now can handle up to 1TB of RAM, but a common gaming PC doesn’t need that much of RAM. Those who are rendering large files or doing other memory intensive tasks, should consider going with 32GB ,64GB or more. Otherwise, just gaming and normal use, 16GB is fine for most users.

The faster the memory speed is, the better the RAM is. The lower CAS latency is, the better the RAM is. However, when they increase the memory speed, the CAS latency comes along.

When you choose between RAM of different clock speeds, choose the RAM with the higher clock speed. But when you pick from RAM of identical clock speeds, pick the RAM with lower CAS latency.

DDR4 standard has a CAS latency of at least 15, but the lower the RAM CAS latency is, the more expensive it is. DDR4 RAM with memory speed of 3200MHz, CAS latency of 16 is ideal for mid- and high-end gaming PCs.

For your information, AMD Ryzen CPUs are choosier in RAM memory speed than Intel CPUs. They operate better with RAM that has the memory speed of at least 3000MHz.

Storage: SSD/HDD

SSD is certainly faster than HDD, but it is more expensive. The best solution for fast and large storage is using SSD and HDD simultaneously.

For an average gaming PC, a 500GB SSD is quite a perfect spot. It is enough for the operating system and some favorite games. For larger games and media, you can add one HDD later.

An SSD with the capacity of 256GB could be a little tight, but suitable for budget builds. For premium builds, you can use dual storage with a 1TB SSD and a 4TB HDD.

Which is better: M.2 or 2.5? SATA or NVMe?

The NVMe SSDs are faster than SATA SSDs, but they are also more expensive. You can use an NVMe SSD as primary storage, then the additional SSD, you can use a SATA one.

The M.2 SSDs are more expensive than the 2.5 SSDs with the same storage protocol. There is no difference in speed between them, but using M.2 will keep you from messy cables. Otherwise, if you don’t mind doing cable management, 2.5 SSDs are just fine.

Case and fans

An expensive case is not that different from a cheap case in its priority purpose: containing PC parts and making space for good airflow to cool them down.

More expensive cases often offer a more premium look and have more features, like dust filters, RGB lighting, tempered glass side panel, flexible cable management options, premium card reader, built in audio DAC, sound dampening, radiator mounts, drive mounts,...

Expensive fans for the case don’t matter that much either. As long as it is not too cheap that it creates no airflow when it spins, then it can be used in a case. However, unlike expensive cases, expensive fans can be better in actual use.

Besides controllable RGB lighting, premium fans are stronger but quieter and last longer. Some say their Noctua fans have been running for 10 years. So these fans cost more at first, but they are totally worth it.

How many fans is enough for a gaming PC case? People now install many fans into their PC case mostly for RGB lighting, when the truth is that two fans are quite enough: one at the bottom of the front panel, one at the top of the back panel. You can always add more fans to your system as long as those fans create good airflow: some suck cool air into the case, some push hot air outside of the case.

PSU (Power Supply Unit)

In order to choose the right PSU for your gaming PC, you need to consider these main factors: wattage, efficiency, built quality, PSU form and cable management.

The wattage that a computer needs depends on what components your gaming PC has. High-end processors and graphics cards require more power than their low end counterparts. When you overclock your system, it will draw even more power.

Most PSUs work most efficiently at 40 to 80 percent of their maximum wattage. To leave room for upgrades in the future, we should build to about 60% of the PSU capacity (4).

You may hear about “80 plus something PSU”, which is the common PSU efficiency rating. There are a few 80 plus tier from good to great: bronze, silver, gold, and platinum.

You can not know the quality of a PSU by looking at it, you have to research the manufacturers and the products. Don’t be cheap on your PSU. You can save some money on short view by choosing a cheap PSU, but it might damage your system later.

There are several forms of PSUs, including ATX, SFX, FlexATX, pico ATX, but ATX and SFX forms are the most popular. ATX PSUs are for standard cases, while SFX PSUs are for compact PCs or htpcs.

To make it easier for cable management, PSU brands make three types of cable mode: full modular, semi modular and standard cables. Full modular PSUs cost the most, but they allow you to organize your power cables easily, and they are extremely useful for compact builds. With standard PSUs, there are always unused cables that you can not do anything about. It is really annoying, especially when it interferes with airflow in small PC cases.

FAQs

1. Are Prebuilt Gaming Pcs better than Custom Build Gaming Pcs?

Not quite.

Buying a prebuilt gaming PC is easier and quicker. When you don’t have knowledge about PC parts or don’t have time to wait for ordering parts then put them together, ordering a prebuilt gaming PC certainly is a wise choice.

Buying a prebuilt gaming PC might cost less and be more convenient in maintenance. A prebuilt PC could be cheaper individual parts as the sales get OEM price for their products. When you have any problem with the PC, just call for technical support of the store. It’s a lot of work to do to find hardware problems on your PC, especially when you are new to this.

On the other hand, building a custom gaming PC gives you additional customization. You can pick specific components as you are interested. When you know what you are doing, it is fun building a new gaming PC.

2. Is a Gaming PC worth the money?

Yes. When you plan to buy a gaming PC, you mostly have the money to buy it and have time to use it.

A gaming PC that features a good CPU and a graphics card can run new games smoothly. The only problem is that you have to make time to enjoy the gaming time. Then yes, a gaming PC is worth the money.

Vice versa, if you can not afford a gaming PC, or can not afford the time playing games, it is not worth the money.

3. Which CPU is better at gaming, Intel or AMD?

AMD is.

AMD’s CPUs are smashing Intel’s since Ryzen 3000 series. Ryzen 5000 series keeps doing it.

New AMD’s architecture has higher IPC, consumes less energy, and produces less heat than Intel’s. So AMD’s 5000 series are now better in both single core performance and multi-core performance.

4. Which is better at gaming, NVIDIA or AMD graphics card?

Overall, NVIDIA’s graphics card is better at gaming for now.

The latest RX 6000 series are giving promising results for a future win for AMD. However, NVIDIA ‘s graphics cards are still better in compatibility on more games than AMD’s. AMD just needs a little more time.
